Shawniya championed science with the
McMaster Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Initiative
Shawniya, who's earning her Ph.D. at McGill, was one of the student leaders who volunteered with the McMaster Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Initiative. WISE plays a key role in supporting, celebrating and advocating for diversity and equity at McMaster and beyond the university through community outreach, mentorship and conferences.
Science communication and outreach ensure that individuals from all sorts of backgrounds have access to scientific information. The opportunity to learn and conduct science has still to reach a place where biases don't hinder the ability for all people to partake. Introducing science to underrepresented populations in the field and advocating for these populations is important for science to benefit from new ideas.
