Robert champions science at the
W.J. McCallion Planetarium
Robert introduces the far reaches of the galaxy to our next generation of scientists. As the Director of the William J. McCallion Planetarium in the Burke Science Building at McMaster, Robert leads a team of graduate student presenters who deliver custom tours to community members of all ages. McMaster’s planetarium was the first in Ontario to offer public shows in 1950. Robert was the driving force behind McMaster's Faculty of Science adding a portable planetarium in 2022 to bring the planets and stars to community members who face barriers to travelling to campus.
Championing science, science communication and community outreach are all important to inspire younger generations to explore the universe, whether out in space or more locally at home. Championing science also increases scientific literacy for everyone in this age of fake news, cyber attacks, and disinformation. It's important to invite everyone to think about the awe and wonder of our world and learn how to live in peace, equity, and balance with one another and our environment. That's a universal message of increasing importance as we see what's going on all around us. Including different perspectives and broadening our understanding and empathy are necessary for us all if we are to move forward together.
