Elevate: A Day for Inclusion in Science
Sara and a team of volunteers inspire future scientists with a full day of hands-on workshops and inspirational talks by faculty and students. The annual event, organized by Promoting Inclusion in Physics and Astronomy, is for Grade 10 students, with a special focus on teens who traditionally identify with equity-seeking groups in STEM. For many students, it's their first time visiting a university campus. Sara and the Elevate team of volunteers make sure every student feels welcome and that they belong.
Science is responsible for countless innovations and discoveries. In order for the full impact of these advances to be felt, scientists must be able to communicate with those outside of the scientific community in a thoughtful and effective way. Coupled with this, improving and advancing science means focusing on inclusivity. Science is for everyone and must be welcoming of everyone.
