Lejla champions science with the
McMaster Carbon Sink Forest
Lejla is part of the team of graduate and undergraduate students, postdoctoral fellows and faculty who are planting a carbon sink forest in West Hamilton with help from community partners and volunteers. The growth and health of all 1,000 trees will be monitored and the data collected from the project will be shared with researchers around the world who are interested in growing similar forests as one solution to address climate change.
We connect with each other through sharing stories. If we want our science to have impact beyond our own walls, scientists need to foster emotional connections to the “why” of our research—why care, why is this important, how does this affect me as an individual? If we can create this connection to the individual, we will make change happen. And it will be change rooted in science.
