Altaf champions science as the director of the
McMaster Centre for Climate Change
Altaf has made science communication and community outreach a key priority for the McMaster Centre for Climate Change. The centre runs community events throughout the year, including public lectures and climate video competitions. The centre's latest research project - the McMaster Carbon Sink Forest - invites students and community members to plant 1,000 trees that will generate data to be shared with international researchers looking to grow similar forests.
All of the centre's outreach activities help raise awareness of climate change and engage academia, industry, business, local and international communities to take actions for a low carbon and sustainable environment.
It's important to effectively, accurately and responsibly communicate geoscience. Society is facing numerous connected environmental and resource challenges that geoscientists have solutions for and yet many people currently don't understand the integral role that geoscientists will need to play in humanity's future. Science communication and outreach help raise awareness of environmental issues and help society make well-informed decisions to address climate change and develop low carbon sustainable communities.
