Meet New Faculty Member – Meagan MacKenzie
“I’ve always been interested in other people and thinking about why they do the things that they do. As a child, and even now, I love fiction – reading allows me to take other people’s perspectives and begin to understand their motivations and behaviour. Once I got to my first psychology course in university, I felt like I had come home.
“My research has focused on mental health and well-being, primarily for those with anxiety. I have conducted research on several different types of self-help methods as well as different mindfulness strategies. As a teaching professor, I bring my knowledge of mental health to the classroom where I work to create a sense of community. I want to support students on their path to success.”
Meagan completed her bachelor’s degree in psychology at Trent University. She completed her master’s degree in social and developmental psychology at Wilfrid Laurier. She then moved to St. John’s, NL to pursue a doctoral degree in experimental psychology (clinical research emphasis) at Memorial University under the mentorship of Ken Fowler where she investigated the sociodemographic profile and determinants of stress in individuals with social anxiety. Meagan then returned to Wilfrid Laurier for a postdoctoral fellowship with Nancy Kocovski where she examined self-help behaviour in the context of social anxiety.
When not at work, Meagan enjoys knitting, baking bread, reading, spending time in the garden and watching cooking shows.
