Moment Mentor Memento ep. 5 with sustainable, safe and equitable urban transport champion Léa Ravensbergen
Sustainable, safe and equitable transport champion Léa Ravensbergen is this week’s guest on the Moment Mentor Memento podcast with Faculty of Science journalist in residence Jeff Goodes.
Want to know why more women aren’t cycling in North American cities? Léa, an Assistant Professor in McMaster University’s School of Earth, Environment & Society has some theories and solutions.
Along with sharing a defining moment and giving a shout-out to one of many mentors, Lea talks about her memento – an all-season bike she built with a friend and rode around Toronto during her PhD.
Léa received her PhD from the University of Toronto in 2020, and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at McGill University, McMaster University, and the University of Oxford. Her critical transport research explores how cities can foster more sustainable transport systems in an equitable manner. She uses a combination of qualitative (interviews, mobile ethnography, participatory mapping, observations) and quantitative (survey analysis, GIS) methods to uncover barriers to walking, cycling, and public transport. Much of her recent work has focused on gender-equity in active travel and age-friendly transport planning.
