Skype A Scientist – Dennis Kolosov
“With Skype a Scientist, I’ve had online conversations with classes of elementary and secondary school students in Massachusetts, New Jersey, Virginia, and Ohio. My most memorable experience has been with a class of students in Wooster, Ohio. It’s an agricultural center for the state so the students had a vested interest in my research into crop pests. Their interest spiked even further when I talked about my collaboration with a colleague at the University of Ohio. Many of the students wanted to learn how they too could become scientists and researchers.
During Skype a Scientist sessions, you get to watch students become excited and enthusiastic about science and gain confidence. Skype a Scientist is an easy way to connect with future scientists from around the world while also developing your communication skills. If you can explain your research and its importance and implications to a third grader, you can explain it to anyone and demonstrate that science is for everyone.”
Launched in 2017 by a University of Connecticut biology graduate student, Skype a Scientist matches scientists with teachers in more than 14,000 classrooms from 43 countries for 30-40 minute online conversations. Scientists complete a short survey that identifies their field of study and focus of their research.
Meet a Science Ambassador showcases faculty and students who are sharing their passion for science through more than 40 community outreach initiatives carried out and supported by the Faculty of Science.
