”I didn’t get much advice in my first year, nor did I seek any out. As a result, university felt pretty lonely at times. If I could go back and talk to my first-year self, I would tell her that she’s not alone — that everyone is trying to figure things out and that so many people are around to help. First year may look different this year, but as McMaster students you’re part of an amazing, supportive community. My advice is to connect with other people in your program. Go to virtual events, even just to listen. Don’t be afraid to reach out to your peers, upper-year students and profs — they’re the ones who can give you advice and encouragement when you need it the most. Find your mentors and allies. We’re all around you rooting for you”!
