 The PNB Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Working Group was created in the summer of 2019 with an initial focus on addressing the gender imbalance in our faculty. We also started to think about creating a more inclusive department. The committee officially formed in May 2020 in response to the tragic killing of George Floyd and the increased awareness and recognition of anti-Black racism and other forms of social injustice in our society. As of October 2020, the committee is formed by representatives from faculty, staff, post-docs, graduate, and undergraduate students. The committee seeks input and guidance from members of the department to pursue the following aims:

  • Identify departmental barriers to equity, diversity, and inclusion
  • Lead the PNB community in defining core departmental values and making these values visible
  • Suggest and create policies and procedures that uphold and enact these core values
  • Organize activities that increase EDI consciousness
  • Advise organizers on how to increase EDI awareness in departmental activities
  • Foster a culture in which conversations and education around prejudice, discrimination, and inequity are a priority
