Moment Mentor Memento podcast ep. 14 – Baby Lab’s Gabriel Xiao

The 14th and final episode of the Moment Mentor Memento podcast with journalist-in-residence Jeff Goodes features a conversation with Gabriel Xiao, an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience & Behavior.
Gabriel leads the Baby Lab at McMaster University where a team of scientists study how human cognition develops from infancy to early childhood. The team wants to understand how children acquire cognitive and social skills as they grow up. They use various research methods in the lab that are suitable for infants and children, such as eye tracking, neuroimaging, and behavioural testing. The team hopes to reveal the mechanisms of human cognitive development and provide evidence to help solve social problems and address developmental disorders.
Gabriel has dedicated his career to exploring how real-world experiences shape our perceptual and social cognitive capabilities at early stages of life. His research uses behavioural, eye-tracking, computational modeling, and neuroimaging techniques.
Originally from China. Gabriel came to Canada in 2010 as a Ph.D. student, supervised by Dr. Kang Lee at the University of Toronto. He then moved to Princeton University as a post-doc researcher working with Dr. Lauren Emberson.
When he’s not working, Gabriel enjoys street photography and video games, allowing him to wander at will in real and virtual worlds.
