Moment Mentor Memento ep. 7 with biomechanics researcher Dylan Kobsar
Biomechanics researcher Dylan Kobsar is the 7th guest to go into the podcast studio with journalist in residence Jeff Goodes.
Dylan, an associate professor in McMaster University’s Department of Kinesiology, takes science in the lab and out to where knees are bending, wearing and tearing from bearing heavy loads.
Dylan talks about his research with seniors and elite athletes, a defining moment in his career, two mentors who made a lasting impact and a DIY memento from his grad school days that carries special meaning and a reminder that anything’s doable.
His research aims to make biomechanics and human movement analyses more accessible and real-world relevant. Dylan focuses on the use of wearable inertial sensors to help track and treat musculoskeletal disorders or injuries. Wearable sensors have the capabilities to collect a variety of detailed human movement data similar to conventional motion capture gait laboratories. When these devices are combined with innovative analyses – including machine learning algorithms and visualization techniques – a whole new world of possibilities for assessing human movement is realized.
Dylan’s research uses these accessible devices and innovative techniques to uncover patterns in human movement that can help us better understand the progression and treatment of individuals with knee osteoarthritis and running injuries.
Moment Mentor Memento is a 14-episode podcast series created, hosted and produced by Jeff. The second half of the series will air in late September.
