The Faculty of Science at McMaster University is committed to promoting scientific literacy and understanding. One of the ways we deliver on our mission is by further strengthening the communication and media literacy skills of faculty and students.
Our Journalist in Residence Program connects established and emerging researchers with accomplished Canadian and international journalists who share our passion for science.
Residents mentor faculty and students on how to work effectively with the media and communicate compelling stories about science. In return, faculty and students help journalists develop an even deeper understanding and appreciation of science at Canada’s most research-intensive university.
Journalists spend between four to eight weeks on campus during the fall or winter semester and receive a competitive stipend, as well as an office and accommodations if required. In addition to meeting with researchers in their labs and out in the field, residents will host science journalism workshops for faculty, students and staff and moderate a Discover Science talk for the general public. There is no expectation that journalists will produce stories about the Faculty of Science during or after their residency.
We invite applications from staff and freelance journalists who are working in digital, print, radio or television. If interested, please submit:
- A cover letter and resume
- A brief proposal of what you would contribute and accomplish during your residency
- Access to an online portfolio of work
- and at least three references that will be contacted if you are a shortlisted candidate
