From classroom to contributor: 35 years of workplace-ready science co-ops

This year marks two major milestones for McMaster’s Science Careers & Experience Centre: its 35th anniversary and the launch of a new co-op program in Kinesiology.
But perhaps the most telling milestone? 98% of employers who have hired co-op students agree that their co-op student met or exceeded their expectations.
Why Employers Keep Coming Back
“My co-op student developed a competitive funding proposal under tight deadlines, demonstrating adaptability and leadership in high-pressure situations,” says Dr. Gregory German. “She consistently operated at the level of a senior graduate student, refining research protocols, consent forms, and bringing innovative perspectives to research questions. Her presentations were praised by senior leadership, including the VP of Research, and her contributions significantly advanced the lab’s strategic goals.”
At a recent McMaster Science Co-op Student of the Year Awards event, many employers praised students for their ability to operate at the level of senior graduate students.
The Science Professional Competency Framework
McMaster Science students bring more than just academic knowledge to the workplace. They’re equipped with the critical competencies and forward-thinking mindset needed to tackle today’s most complex challenges, says Samantha Couch, Program Manager, Co-operative Education.
Building on the world-class education of students, it’s crucial to prepare students with professional competencies that will help them stand out in a competitive job market.
To identify the most valuable competencies, the Careers & Experience team consulted with employers, faculty, students and alumni. This collaboration led to the creation of the Science Professional Competency Framework which focuses on eight core competencies.
These competencies are embedded across all programs, ensuring that graduates are not just technically capable but professionally equipped to thrive in diverse workplace environments.
Kinesiology: Expanding Opportunities
With the addition of Kinesiology, the number of co-op programs run by the Faculty of Science has increased to 14. This expansion opens new pathways for students to integrate academic learning with real-world experience. It’s a winning combination that helps bridge the gap between the classroom and career readiness.
Design Thinking at the Core
Innovation and resilience are also front and center in the Centre’s approach, driven by the integration of design thinking throughout its programming.
Design thinking is being used in career workshops, events, appointments and courses. Starting in second year, students can enroll in Design Your Science Career, a course that introduces them to design-thinking tools to navigate challenges, discover their potential and explore fulfilling career paths.
A Boutique Approach to Employer Partnerships
“We work closely with employers to deliver responsive, tailored services that align with their unique hiring needs,” says Couch.
The Faculty of Science is McMaster’s longest-running undergraduate co-operative education program and the only faculty accredited by Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada. The faculty offers a unique boutique style service tailored to employers, focusing on understanding their specific needs and providing effective solutions to hiring challenges.
35 Years of Building Futures
What started as a small support hub has evolved to become a key driver of student career success. Alice O’Carroll, the centre’s director, says the centre has continually evolved to meet the changing needs of students and employers.
O’Carroll emphasized that professional experience is just one piece of the puzzle that gets students ready for life after Mac – the other two include preparing students with the professional competencies and design-thinking skills they need to succeed. The goal is to develop high-performing, industry-ready professionals who can contribute meaningfully from day one.
As the Science Careers & Experience Centre celebrates its 35th year, its commitment to innovation, partnership and student success continues to shape the future of work.
