ENVIRSC 4BB3 – Field Techniques in Hydrology taught by Dr. Mike Waddington. I loved this course because each week we learned different hydrology skills to use in the field such as measuring stream discharge, mapping watersheds, and groundwater well monitoring. It allowed me to explore hydrology in a new way beyond concepts learned in lecture and spend time working in nature with my peers which made me look forward to class each week.
I’m thankful to have had a role model like Dr. Rebecca Moumblow during my undergraduate experience. Dr. Moumblow instructs Earth Science courses within the School of Earth, Environment & Society and her passion for hard-rock geology cannot be ignored. My favourite memory in her classes was when a student asked her about the earrings and necklace she was wearing and she gave a description of which geologic setting the gems came from. Having her as an instructor inspires me to pursue my interests in hard-rock geology and assures me that there is a place for me in Earth Science.
Acting as one of the Co-Presidents of the School of Earth, Environment & Society Student Association (SEESSA) during my last year of undergrad. My time in this role allowed me to share the pride I have for my school through representing the Earth, Environment & Society student body on many different levels at McMaster. My favourite aspect of this role was the sense of community I felt through connecting with fellow students throughout the year. Working with the executive team and the ambassador team to facilitate events for students to come together and experience the community within our school made me extremely proud to be part of the SEESSA team. I’ve gained a new level of self-confidence which I will carry with me beyond my time at McMaster.
My dad. He has been very supportive during each level of my academic career. He encouraged me to pursue Earth Science and Geographic Information Science (GIS) at McMaster. My dad has also taught me the importance of community involvement which is something I will always carry with me. I wouldn’t be where I am now without his support.
Get involved in extra-curricular activities. I began getting involved in my third year and it changed the rest of my undergraduate experience. I gained more confidence in myself and the sense of community it made me feel was unmatched. I’ve been involved throughout my fourth year as Co-President of the School of Earth, Environment & Society Student Association (SEESSA) and as a Faculty of Science Welcome Week Representative. These positions allowed me to meet new friends and gave me some of my favourite memories of undergrad. My insider tip is to check your McMaster email.
