Attitude of gratitude part one: graduate gives thanks to research scientist Dan Chen – “a friend to all”

Former Acting Dean of Science Gianni Parise gave the Faculty of Science’s graduating class of 2025 once final homework assignment during Spring Convocation – write a thank-you note to someone who made a difference. Nicole Malette wrote a thank-you letter to Dan Chen and addressed it to the science students who’ll be starting their first term in September. Dan is a research scientist as well as the Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer with Neopara Materials and Enroute Interfaces. Nicole graduated in June with a Bachelor of Science degree from the Faculty of Science’s Honours Chemical Biology Co-op Program. Nicole was also featured in the Faculty’s Grad to Watch series – read her story here.
Dear Class of 2029:
Throughout your time at McMaster, I sincerely hope you have the chance to work with Dr. Daniel Chen, or simply ‘Dan’ to those lucky enough to know him, and here’s why.
Dan is a research scientist within the Department of Chemistry & Chemical Biology at McMaster, and he was my primary mentor when I completed an eight-month co-op term in the Brook Research Group at the university.
Despite not wanting to instruct lecture halls full of students, Dan is an excellent teacher – always working patiently to help those who want to learn. He is often described as the ‘go-to’ guy in the lab, always knowing what to do in any situation, and solving any problem that arises.
What sets Dan apart as an incredible mentor, aside from his wide range of experience in various fields, is his genuine kindness. Dan is truly a friend to all, saying hello to everyone he encounters and making sure that everyone feels welcome.
Dan taught me one of the most important lessons I’m taking with me after graduation, and that is to remember that failure is important too. Failure should not be viewed as a setback, but instead, as a learning opportunity, as it allows for us to grow and move forward.
I will always be grateful for the time I spent working with Dan, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today without his unwavering guidance and support. I hope you all encounter a Dan throughout your time at McMaster, if not the man himself – someone who fosters curiosity and listens without judgement.
Thank you Dan, and best of luck to the McMaster Class of 2029 with all of your future endeavours!
Sincerely,
Nicole
